A Jog in the dark

They made their way to the race track , in the dark. Jogging was an obsession with them , and had to be fulfilled at all costs. Ill-timed grocery shopping, homework projects, dinners made , served , and then they had found precious time . But it had gotten dark by then. A massive power cut had ensured total darkness , except for the powerful beams from the headlamps of passing vehicles. A nightjar shrieked into the barmy stillness.
” There is no moonrise either , unlike yesterday.”She said , feeling for his hand.
“Waning phase.”
They swung into a light step as a ghostly shape sped past them .
“What was that ?” She whispered.
“Another mad jogger like us .”
“We are not alone .”
They giggled , and she felt better. The eyes got used to the dark, and the track felt familiar, she took a deep breath of the warm, eucalyptus scented air. “Ahh, bliss.”

A peacock called out to its mate , piercingly haunting in the dark. This was their best moment of the day. They need not talk , just run . Concentrate on hitting the track, and listening to their heat beat and rhythmic pants. She sent a small prayer heavenward. She always did this whenever gratitude over came her. Their neighbour lost her brother today , massive heart attack. The grief had spilt over, and come to their home .
She made extra food , and dropped them before she came . The image of the crestfallen look on her usually chirpy neighbour lingered on.

Life is so fleeting. Like the air . She thought. The night air was cooling down . Heavens above , thank you Lord. The "ghost " ran ahead of them, and on an impulse, and started waving his arms . A car headlight caught him in the act , and made him look like a giant insect , desperately trying to take off.

She giggled . He turned to her "What is funny ?" He huffed.
"Nothing. Just running in the dark."
"Like Dancing in the Dark."
He broke into a grin . She could see his white teeth in the dark.
She smiled back .
